Artist Statement

My artistic practice begins with what is often overlooked, and with what remains after things have outlived their original purpose: objects no longer in use, images that have lost their function, structures beyond our field of vision, and parts of the body that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

I work across film, installation, sculpture, and collage, using materials such as newspapers, discarded paper, electronic waste, chemical plastics, X-ray film, and joss paper. Rather than restoring their former value, I place these materials in new relationships, allowing their functions, memories, and meanings to be reconsidered.

The increasingly short lifespan of objects, particularly the constant replacement of technological devices, has led me to observe a similar process in human beings. I began to wonder whether the human genome might also be affected, in ways we cannot yet fully perceive, by changes in our environment and everyday habits. Over time, could these conditions lead to deeper forms of adaptation within the body — from perception and behavior to biological structures? I bring this speculation into my artistic practice as a way of thinking about the human body not as something fixed, but as something continually shaped and transformed by the world around it.

Thực hành nghệ thuật của tôi bắt đầu từ những gì thường bị bỏ qua và trạng thái của chúng sau khi đã hoàn thành một đời sống: những vật thể không còn được sử dụng, những hình ảnh đã mất chức năng, những cấu trúc nằm ngoài tầm nhìn và những phần cơ thể không thể thấy bằng mắt thường.

Tôi làm việc với điện ảnh, sắp đặt, điêu khắc và collage; vật liệu tôi sử dụng gồm báo in, giấy loại, chất thải công nghiệp điện tử, nhựa hóa chất, phim X-quang và giấy vàng mã... Thay vì phục hồi giá trị cũ của những vật liệu này, tôi đặt chúng vào những mối quan hệ mới, nơi chức năng, ký ức và giá trị của chúng được nhìn nhận lại.

Từ vòng đời ngày càng ngắn của đồ vật, đặc biệt là sự thay thế liên tục của các thiết bị công nghệ, tôi bắt đầu quan sát một quá trình tương tự ở con người. Tôi đặt giả thuyết rằng mã gen của con người có thể không hoàn toàn bất biến trước những thay đổi của môi trường và thói quen sống; những tác động này, theo thời gian, có thể dẫn đến những thích nghi sâu hơn trong cơ thể — từ nhận thức, hành vi đến các cấu trúc sinh học. Đây là một giả thuyết tôi đưa vào thực hành nghệ thuật để nhìn con người không như một cấu trúc cố định, mà như một cơ thể luôn trong quá trình biến đổi.

Biography

Mzung Nguyễn (b. 1982) is a Vietnamese interdisciplinary artist with roots in filmmaking and a multifaceted creative journey. Her background in journalism (Hue University, 2006) and her specialized training in filmmaking, supported by the Ford Foundation (Hanoi, 2007-2008), the University of Southern California (USA, 2009), and the Asia Film Academy (South Korea, 2009), laid the foundation for her storytelling prowess.
