White Coral: A site-specific project

White Coral investigates the ecological imbalance caused by the invasive spread of crown-of-thorns starfish in the coral reefs of Thái An, a coastal village in Central Vietnam. This project expands the discourse on interspecies relationships and environmental transformations beyond anthropocentric narratives.

As ecosystems are continuously reshaped by human activity, could species imbalance be understood as a form of “reconfigured nature”? If nature itself is not a static entity but a dynamic force that reorganizes and recalibrates, can humans abandon their anthropocentric worldview to recognize themselves as just one among many actors in this process of change?

By intertwining artistic and scientific inquiry, this project also questions: Can artistic practice function as a critical research method, not merely observing but actively engaging with the evolving relationships between species in the Anthropocene era?

White Coral đặt ra vấn đề về sự mất cân bằng sinh thái khi một loài trở nên thống trị quá mức, dẫn đến sự suy tàn của những hệ sinh thái khác. Dự án này mở rộng cách nhìn nhận về sinh thể không chỉ trong giới hạn của con người, mà trong sự tương tác phức tạp giữa các loài và môi trường.

Trong một thế giới nơi hệ sinh thái liên tục bị biến đổi bởi con người, liệu có thể coi những thay đổi của quần thể loài là một dạng "tự nhiên tái cấu trúc" (reconfigured nature)? Nếu thiên nhiên không phải là một thực thể tĩnh mà luôn vận động và tái lập trật tự mới, thì liệu con người có thể từ bỏ tư duy trung tâm luận (anthropocentrism) để nhìn nhận chính mình như một phần trong chuỗi thay đổi đó?

Dự án cũng mở ra cuộc đối thoại giữa nghệ thuật và khoa học, đặt câu hỏi: Liệu thực hành nghệ thuật có thể đóng vai trò như một hình thức nghiên cứu, một diễn ngôn mang tính phê bình về sự vận hành của sinh thể trong thời đại Anthropocene?
