Phù Sa/Alluvial Soil is a series of 17 gouache works on papier-mâché, continuing my material-based practice with paper. Through experimentation, the artist discovered a resonance between the vivid intensity of gouache pigments and the porous, rough texture of papier-mâché. Emerging from reflections on Central Vietnam, a region shaped by waterways, monsoon seasons, and cycles of departure and return, Phù Sa evokes a sensibility of place. The raw surfaces of papier-mâché become emotional strata, carrying traces of landscape and memory: rugged like cliffs eroded by sea salt, or soft like seaweed washed ashore after high tide. Layers of gouache emerge and dissolve like ocean currents.
The works is part of the Autumn Residency Program organized by Estuary Gallery Hội An and HÙA Collective.
It is currently on view alongside several other bodies of work in the exhibition Neither Here Nor There / Không Ở Đây Cũng Không Ở Đó, from August 6 to October 8, 2026, at Estuary Gallery Hội An, 25 Nguyễn Phan Vinh, Tân Thành Beach, Hội An Tây.
