Sentimental (2026) is a series of mixed-media sculptures by Mzung Nguyễn, using papier-mâché and other materials, developed and adapted in response to the exhibition space and in interaction with the artist’s scent-making practice. Continuing Mzung’s exploration of paper beyond the two-dimensional surface, the sculptures appear simultaneously organic and constructed, evoking rocks, terrains, objects, or forms that have lost their original functions and names. They inhabit an uncertain space between the familiar and the yet-to-be-defined. Here, paper becomes both material and a surface of accumulation. Through processes of layering, deformation, and reconstruction, it carries traces of time and of its own previous states. Within Neither Here nor There, the sculptures enter into dialogue with Mzung’s scent-based works, allowing material, form, and scent to coexist and interact within the space. Sentimental proposes a material and sensory understanding of place as layers of traces continually formed, transformed, accumulated, and retained.
The works is part of the Autumn Residency Program organized by Estuary Gallery Hội An and HÙA Collective.
It is currently on view alongside several other bodies of work in the exhibition Neither Here Nor There / Không Ở Đây Cũng Không Ở Đó, from August 6 to October 8, 2026, at Estuary Gallery Hội An, 25 Nguyễn Phan Vinh, Tân Thành Beach, Hội An Tây.
